Junior Bonspiel Report – Oliver Curling Centre - February 8
The Oliver Curling Centre recently hosted an exciting Junior Bonspiel, welcoming 28 young curlers who each paid a $15.00 entry fee for a day filled with competition and fun. Summerland Curling Juniors provided two teams for the intermediate division and two teams for the beginner division, contributing to a well-rounded and competitive event. The event featured eight teams, with four teams in the intermediate division and four in the beginner division, ensuring a balanced and engaging experience for all participants.
Throughout the day, the competition was intense, with every team showcasing their skills and enthusiasm on the ice. The games were closely contested, keeping both players and spectators engaged. Despite the competitive nature of the matches, the emphasis remained on sportsmanship and enjoyment, and it was evident that all the kids had a fantastic time.
In addition to the thrilling gameplay, the bonspiel also provided a welcoming atmosphere with refreshments available throughout the event. Coffee and drinks were offered to attendees, ensuring that everyone stayed energized. Donuts was generously provided by Tim Hortons, giving the young athletes a quick boost before returning to the ice. For lunch, the participants enjoyed a delicious pizza meal, by Pizza Hut, which was a hit among the kids and volunteers alike.
The Junior Bonspiel was further supported by generous donations to the junior program from several community organizations. The Oliver Kiwanis contributed $1,500, while the Oliver Legion donated $500 to help sustain and grow junior curling initiatives. Tim Hortons provided 36 donuts and a $20 gift card, adding to the event’s refreshments. Additionally, Oliver Buy Low supported the bonspiel with donations of juice, snacks, and bottled water, ensuring that all participants stayed hydrated and fueled throughout the day.
Prizes were awarded to each team that participated in the bonspiel. A trophy presentation and medals were given out for the respective first place winners in the intermediate and beginner divisions, and Goldline and other gear were also given to the remaining teams to celebrate their efforts and participation.
A special thank you goes out to the dedicated volunteers who helped make this event a success. Their time and effort ensured a smooth and enjoyable experience for all involved. I'd like to extend my gratitude to Cathy Pidduck, Arnie Janzen, Walter Colk, and Paul and Claudia Morrison for their invaluable assistance throughout the event. I'd also like to thank Norm for his work on the ice.
I believe the 2025 Junior Bonspiel at the Oliver Curling Centre was a resounding success, thanks to the dedication of the volunteers and sponsors. The event not only provided a great opportunity for young curlers to develop their skills in a fun and supportive environment but also fostered a sense of community and friendships among participants. The excitement and smiles on the kids’ faces were a testament to a day well spent on the ice. I look forward to hosting more events like this in the future to continue growing the love for curling among young athletes.
