Oliver Curling Club Volunteer of the Year Mike KellyOur very own Mike Kelly has just won Curl BC’s provincial award for Club Volunteer of the Year. This award recognizes the outstanding and exceptional contributions of volunteers to their clubs that set them apart from all other volunteers at the club level around the province. Mike’s dedicated service for the Oliver Curling Club, overseeing building and maintenance operations as well as being on the board, earned him this well deserved honour.

Mike has long been our “unsung hero” applying his years of experience of plant operations generously and tirelessly for our club since 2016. His life during the curling season seems to revolve around the club. He typically would arrive at the club by 7 am to check on, fix, install or replace something. Then he would help get the ice ready for Day League draws, curl in one or sometimes both draws, then go back to his maintenance role. And he’d often be back on the ice in the evening (working and playing). Mike is also a craftsman. He has built and rebuilt many things at the club, whether it’s something utilitarian like bulletin boards or endboards or as fine as wine racks and table tops for the bar décor. And in the off-season, Mike can still regularly be seen at the club in between rounds of golf!

What really sets Mike apart among volunteers in BC is his unselfish commitment and incomparable work ethic. He does all the little things (many that we don’t even notice because he’s already taken care of them) and tackles the big things without reservation. He is always at the club ensuring that everything is working well and producing the best on- and off-ice experiences for all our curlers.

When Mike learned of his award, he said in his typically modest way that it’s all of our volunteers who keep the club going and, like a jigsaw puzzle, everyone contributes a piece to make the whole picture. But somehow you just know Mike has fixed, built, painted, maintained and/or installed many of those pieces!

CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU, MIKE!
