9th Annual Combined Bonspiel – February 29-21, 2016

Over this last weekend Eastlink Curling Centre “Home of the Oliver Curling Club” hosted a very successful Combined Bonspiel. With 128 people participating in the event it was a busy time for everyone. A lot of laughter and cheers and sportsmanship was filling the curling rink over the weekend. Some old friends were reunited as other new friendships started up. The food, Music and dancing on Saturday night showed what great hosts Oliver is to our out of town teams.

Team Lyver from Osoyoos won the Woman’s A Event shocking everyone when Red Lyver came out of a 12 year Bonspiel retirement to lead her team to a victory over Team Casorso from Oliver. Team Tarr From Penticton  won the Men’s A Event. Also a great event as this team had not played together until this year and managed to win against them Green from Summerland. Many thanks to the Sponsors, Volunteers and the players themselves for making this such a great weekend.

Great Bonspiel!!

The Summerland team listed Team Clement – Summerland,  is joined by two Oliver players – Diane Tetreault who will be playing third and Sylvia Lowe who will be playing second. Tammy Brennan of Summerland will play lead.  Jackie Clement took over skipping the team while Lil Blashko recovers from an injury.

The team qualified for the Provincials in Enderby by defeating the Sandra Jenkins team from Salmon Arm, last season’s BC representatives and Bronze Medal winners at the Nationals.  Although it is the first season together for the team in these positions, members of the team have had good success in recent years, winning a bronze medal at the 2013/2014 Senior Women’s Provincials,  with Sylvia Lowe at second, Tammy Brennan at lead, Lil Blashko at skip, and Diane Tetreault as fifth player. This team is looking forward to another very successful year at the Provincials in Richmond.

Junior Bonspiel – February 6, 2016

The Oliver Junior Bonspiel started at 9:00 A.M. and ended at approximately 4;00 P.M. We had 12 teams participate, 4 teams from Oliver, 1 combined Penticton/Oliver team, 3 teams from Penticton, 2 teams from Osoyoos, and 2 teams from Summerland. Princeton was invited but was not able to attend. There was a great turnout of adults to watch the curling. Penticton had the winning team followed by Oliver in second place and 2 teams tied for third, 1 from Oliver and 1 from Summerland. All participants received a prize and only the top 3 finishing teams received Medals. Lee and Leonard from the Oliver Kiwanis Club were there to present the medals to the winning teams. They also presented the Curling Club with a cheque in the amount of $1000.00. Eastlink and ODN were there to cover the event for the Media. The turnout of volunteers was fantastic including parents, curlers from the Oliver curling club and coaches or parents from visiting participating clubs. Everyone was invited to enjoy a hot dog or sandwich.

Thanks to all of the club members who helped teach Grade 6 and 7 students the sport of curling. We couldn’t do it without these volunteers. The teachers have thanked us many times and I would also like to express my thanks. 21 volunteers combined to spend 120 hours with these students.
